Often when kids have initials as their name, we think it’s a combination of their first and middle names, but that’s not always the case. Sometimes it’s because they are a “junior” or a “little,” or it’s actually their first and last initial – think JT for Justin Timberlake. Though they are most commonly childhood nicknames or an easy way to shorten hyphenated names – like JP for John-Paul or MK for Mary-Kate, some kids will be called by their initials their whole lives, and we think that’s A-OK.
Like many of our designs for big brother shirts and big sister shirts, initials work equally well for both boys and girls. (Shown: Patterned Delight Big Brother T shirtand Big Sister Tshirt; Playful Doodles Big Brother T shirt and Big Sister Tshirt)
Some initials sound like actual names, i.e. KC sounding like Casey or KT sounding like Katie, which is really cute. (Shown: Blooms and Stamped Style big sister shirts)
A few other initial names we like are DJ, JD, TJ, MJ, JC, CJ – pretty much anything with a “J” seems to work, right? (Shown: Happy To Be, Play Party Hat, Fun To Be One, and Happy Birthday 1st birthday shirts)
Does your wee one have an initial name? Which of these big brother shirts or big sister shirts would fit their personality best?
Naming Trend of the Week: Last Name as First Name
Whether it’s based on a family name or because it just sounds solid, using last names as first names is a very popular choice when picking a moniker. It’s so popular in fact that many names in the top 100 boys – and even girls – names in the US are also common last names.
If you have a kiddo (or two or three) with a last name as first name, we’ve chosen some cool tees, like big brother shirts, onesies, and a few big sister shirts, that would make great gifts.
Presidential names, like Jackson, Carter, Reagan, Kennedy, or Madison, deserve globally conscious tees, for a potential future leader of the free world. (shown: Around the World Big Brother T shirt & Big Sister Tshirt; Future President personalized onesies)
Love the old Hollywood hunks like Rock Hudson, Gary Cooper, Cary Grant, and Errol Flynn, but not crazy about their first names? Pay homage to their suave, slightly roguish style by choosing their last names for your little man. (shown: Retro Style Big Brother T shirt, Double Trouble Big Brother T shirt, and Stamped Style Big Brother T shirt)
Did you choose a last name as a first name? What was your inspiration and which of these big sister and big brother shirts, and onesies best fits your choice?
Boys and girls with hip last names as first names deserve big sister and big brother shirts that are equally hip and stylish. (shown: Chic Style Big Brother T shirt; Modern Fun and Rock On big brother shirts; Colorful Big Sister Tshirt)
Naming Trend of the Week: Two Names
Love more than one beautiful name? No need to choose, go with both! What we love about the two-name moniker is that it can fall into the popular trend to name kids after their grandparents or it can be inspired by ethnic heritage, and it works for both boys and girls.
We’ve chosen some of our very favorite double names t and paired them with a mix of our big brother shirts, big sister shirts, personalized onesies, and 1st birthday shirts.
Personalized baby gifts for showers, birthdays, or even baptism gifts are an ideal way to show off double names. (Shown: My 1st Birthday and Roaring Race Car 1st birthday shirts; and a little sneak peek of our new personalized onesies line)
If you are from another country or want to pay homage to your ancestors, choosing two names from that ethnicity is a sweet tribute. (shown: Around the World Big Brother Tshirt and Big Sister Tshirt)
Floral names like Lily and Rose can be added to a range of names to make them doubly pretty. (shown: Blooms and Flower Power big sister shirts)
What is your fave two name moniker?
Naming Trend of the Week: Girl Names That End in A
When the Social Security Administration released the top 100 baby names of 2012 earlier this year, not only did the top 5 girl names all end in “a” – Sophia, Emma, Isabella, Olivia and Ava – a third of the list fit into that category as well. Long or short, girl names that end with the letter “a” are both pretty and feminine, which is probably why this trend is on the rise.
We think an equally pretty and feminine big sister tshirt design is in order for any girl whose name ends in “a.” (shown: Blooms, Looks Like Me Princess, and Colorful big sister shirts)
We paired the top 5 designs of our big sister shirts with the most popular girl names ending in “a.” (shown: Love to Sketch Big Sister Tshirt, Playful Doodles Big Sister Tshirt, Playful Owls, Sunny Flower, and Over the Rainbow big sister shirts)
In Italy, Spain, Russia, and India, names that end in “a” also dominate the top 10 girl names and offer additional inspiration when choosing a name to represent your family’s heritage. (shown: Around the World Big Sister Tshirt)
What are your favorite girl’s names ending in “a” and which big sister shirts would you choose for them?
Naming Trend of the Week: One Syllable Boys Names
Last week we talked about the appeal of one syllable names and highlighted some of our favorite girl’s names, so it’s only fair we give some love to our favorite one syllable boy’s names.
We’re fans of Cole, Finn, Quinn, and Nate, as well as many others, so we rounded up some additional one syllable names that would look great on our big brother shirts.
Retro names like Ford, Gus, George, and Bruce are having a comeback, so boys with these names would look hip wearing a Retro Style Big Brother T shirt, while the Chic Style or Modern Fun big brother shirts would work with trendier names like Cruz, Ash, Chase, and West.
The Rock On Big Brother T shirt is perfect for boys with cool names inspired by music and musicians, like Rock, Van (Morrison), Jon (Bon Jovi), Prince, Lou or Reed, while the Batter Up Big Brother T shirt is ideal for baseball player inspired names like Joe (DiMaggio), Mark (McGwire), Wade (Boggs), and Cal (Ripken, Jr).
Short, but solid names, like Max, Hank, Ray, and Rod require big brother shirts that are as equally rough and tumble as the boys with these monikers. (Shown: Dig In Big Brother T shirt, Under Construction and Busy Bulldozer big brother shirts)
Does your baby boy have a one syllable name? Which big brother t shirt best fits his personality?
Naming Trend of the Week: Nouns
Noun = a person, place, or thing. And now nouns are also a great resource for baby names. We’ve highlighted floral names and names inspired by places, but there are plenty of other categories of “noun” names that are unique and interesting, and some are even very popular if you don’t want something that’s really “out there.”
Dessert-inspired names like Candy, Charlotte, Madeleine, and Cookie are sweet girl names, while environmental-related names, like Rain, Skye, Stella (“star” in Italian) and Storm are ethereal. (shown: Sweet Treat Big Sister Tshirt, Cake Time 1st Birthday Tshirt, Over the Rainbow Big Sister Tshirt, and Happy To Be 1st Birthday Tshirt)
Bodies of water, like Ocean, River, Lake, Brooke, and Marina, as well as music inspired names, like Lyric, Carol, Chord, Viola, are great inspirations for both boys and girls. (shown: Whale of Fun Big Brother Tshirt or Big Sister Tshirt and Rock On Big Brother Tshirt or Big Sister Tshirt)
Did you choose a noun name for your wee one? Which big sister tshirt, big brother tshirt, or 1st birthday tee best represents their name?
Naming Trend of the Week: Characters from Movies
Just the other day CNN reported that some of the most popular baby names for 2013 are Katniss, Merida, and Django – all as a result of recent box office smash hits like The Hunger Games, Disney’s Brave, and Django Unchained. As we wrote last week, books often inspire baby names, so it only makes sense that movies would as well.
We’ve chosen a few big brother tshirts, big sister tees, and personalized birthday shirts that would be ideal baby keepsakes for kids who were named for characters in some of our favorite movies.
Superhero movies are all the rage, so a Logan (Wolverine), Thor, Peter (Spiderman), Diana (Wonder Woman), or Natasha (Black Widow of The Avengers) would proudly wear their Super Big Sister Tshirt or Big Brother Tshirt.
Even if the 1980’s teen hit movie Sixteen Candles inspired your little Samantha or Jake Ryan, we know you’d never forget their birthday. (shown: Birthday Girl and Cake Time 1st birthday onesies)
In addition to Merida, Disney’s princesses have been influencing names for years, like Belle (Beauty & The Beast), Jasmine (Aladdin), Ariel (The Little Mermaid), and Tiana (The Princess & The Frog), though any little girl will feel like a princess wearing the Looks Like Me Princess Big Sister Tshirt or Charming Castle Big Sister Tshirt.
Have twins? Some famous (and fave) movies with twins offer double the inspiration, like Luke and Leia (Star Wars), Sharon and Susan (The Parent Trap), and Vincent and Julius (Twins). (shown: Double Trouble Big Brother Tshirt and Over the Rainbow Big Sister Tshirt)
If Daddy has his way, baby’s name will reflect some gritty or just plain cool characters from movies like Gladiator (Maximus), The Natural (Roy), or The Fast & The Furious (Dominic). (shown: Retro Style Big Brother Tshirt, Batter Up Big Brother Tshirt and Nuts N’ Bolts Big Brother Tshirt)
Did you or would you name your child after a character in a movie? Which of these big brother tshirts, big sister tees, or 1st birthday onesies would make baby keepsakes for them?
Naming Trend of the Week: Characters from Books
If you’re a big reader like we are, you know how easy it is to fall in love with some literary characters. Books become a part of you, so it’s no surprise their characters inspire baby names. We’ve picked some of our all-time favorite books and matched big sister tees and big brother tshirts with the main characters’ names.
The Skyline Big Sister Tshirt would be a great choice for a girl named after Eloise and her adventures at The Plaza in New York City.
E.B. White’s farm-based Charlotte’s Web is a source for two beautiful girls’ names – Fern and Charlotte – and we think the animal-inspired Merry Menagerie Big Sister Tshirtwould be great fits for either and true baby keepsakes.
Peter, Wendy, John, and Michael are classic names from J.M. Barrie’s popular book Peter Pan and the Kids Play Big Sister Tshirt and Big Brother Tshirt are ideal for little ones named for these childhood favorites.
A lightning bolt marks Harry Potter’s forehead, so any little wizard in training will like the Super Big Brother Tshirt.
Did you name your wee one after a favorite literary character?
Naming Trend of the Week: Naming after Places
When choosing the perfect name for your newborn, there are a lot of things that can go into the process – tradition, heritage, popularity, or sentiment. Places that have impacted your life together, bring back sweet memories, or just have a special pull to them provide a wonderful inspiration for baby names
We’ve picked out some big brother tshirts and big sister tees that reflect a variety of places that make great names.
Places that have a special meaning to parents, whether it’s a favorite getaway spot (i.e. mountain, beach), honeymoon destination (castle, safari), or sentimental location (sporting stadium, concert venue, wedding site), make great names as they are a lovely reminder of a special time. (Shown: Charming Castle Big Sister Tshirt (Regina), Merry Menagerie Big Brother Tshirt (Kenya), Batter Up Big Brother Tshirt (Shea), Whale of Fun Big Brother Tshirt (Zuma))
Bright lights, big city-inspired names like Brooklyn, Paris, Dallas, and even London are cool choices for both boys and girls. (Shown: Skyline Big Sister Tshirt and Big Brother Tshirt)
Countries and continents, like India, China, Asia, Chad, Egypt, offer an exotic way to show heritage or just a love for a land and its people. (Shown: Around the World Big Brother Tshirt and Big Sister Tshirt)
Did you name your wee one after a special place? Which big brother tshirts or big sister tees best represent their name and make the best baby keepsakes?
Naming Trend of the Week: Same Initial for Kids’ Names
While the world was expecting Kim Kardashian and Kanye West to give their new wee one a “K” name, they threw everyone for a loop and went with something out of left field. But like her own immediate family, people have been naming their kids with the same first initials for a long time and we’re sure that will continue to be an ongoing trend.
Having siblings wear clothes that display their same initials, like big sister tees or big brother tshirts, is a really cute way of sharing their connection.
The Over the Rainbow Big Sister Tshirt or Double Trouble Big Sister Tshirt perfectly show off two siblings’ names with the same initial.
We love the idea of a monogram tee, like Super Sister Big Sister Tshirt or Big Brother Tshirt, or big brother and/or big sister tees in the same design, like Taped Up Big Brother/Big Sister Tshirt, for all of the kids, which would be perfect for them to wear for family photos.
What do you think of this trend? Have you used the same initial for your little ones?
